About the Fraternity
Nineteen men at UCLA in 1981. Twelve men at the University of Toronto in 2004. This is how ΛΦΕ got here, and what Alpha Xi has been since.
Mission & vision
What the fraternity is for
To guide men on a lifelong discovery of authenticity and personal growth.
The vision behind it: a world where Lambda men live authentic, fulfilling lives and contribute through the pursuit of their noble purpose.
It is deliberately a lifelong framing. Membership does not end at graduation. In practice, the years after graduation are when most brothers say the fraternity mattered most to them.
National history
1981, and everything after

1981
Founded at UCLA
On 25 February 1981, Master Craig Ishigo and eighteen other men founded Lambda Phi Epsilon to raise the standard of excellence for young college men. Craig Ishigo served as the first president, Darryl Mu as vice president.

1980s
First expansion
Chapters followed at the University of Texas at Austin, SUNY Buffalo and the University of Michigan, the beginning of a national footprint.

1990
Recognised by the NIC
ΛΦΕ became the first Asian-interest fraternity recognised by the North American Interfraternity Conference.

1995–96
Evan Chen and the registry
After Stanford brother Evan Chen was diagnosed with leukaemia, the fraternity ran the largest bone marrow typing drive in NMDP history. Evan passed in 1996. Marrow and stem cell registration has been the fraternity’s permanent cause ever since.

2004
Going international, at U of T
On 5 December 2004, the Alpha Xi Chapter was chartered at the University of Toronto: the first ΛΦΕ chapter established outside the United States.

Today
The largest of its kind
The world’s largest and oldest Asian-interest fraternity, with 100,000+ lifetime members and brothers across North America, Asia and Europe.

Alpha Xi
Our chapter
In 2004, ΛΦΕ expanded into Canada at the University of Toronto, chartering the Alpha Xi Chapter as the first international chapter of Lambda Phi Epsilon.
Being first outside the United States shaped how this chapter operates. Alpha Xi has always had to build its own version of the fraternity for a commuter campus, a different Greek system, and a student body drawn from across the world. Twenty years on, our alumni work in technology, finance, medicine and law, and many have founded their own companies. They remain reachable.
